CareTech Holdings is a provider of learning disability care services and they have purchased the 14 homes of Delam Care Ltd which operate in Stoke and North Staffordshire. The acquisition of Delam Care Ltd means that CareTech now operate 78 residential care homes ( 536 residential care places) along with 2 day centres ( 55 day places).
Liam Byrne, Minister for Care Services has left the Dept. of Health and gone to the Home Office. His replacement is Ivan Lewis who has been an Economic Secretary at the Treasury since May 2005. Mr Lewis is the MP for Bury South and had a background in the voluntary sector before his election in 1997. He is aged 39.
Care Home Fees have increased by more than 50% over the last five years. Average cost of care home fees in 2000/2001 was �13,936. For the period 2005/2006 it had risen to �21,112. Around 40% of residents receive no help with the cost (Help the Aged information)

UK - The number of people expected to be suffering from dementia in 2010 is approx. 870,000. The majority will be suffering from Alzheimers Disease (55%), Vascular dementia (20%), or dementia with Lewy bodies (15%).
Recent events in the storyline of Coronation Street were featured in a GMTV two day event to raise the awareness of dementia. On the first day the Alzheimers Helpline received 3,851 phone calls before 1.00pm.
