In 2002 HM Revenue and Customs it was believed were planning to introduce VAT on private hearing aid supply. Common sense prevailed and this did not happen.
In 2009 the Hearing Aid Council, a regulatory body, is to be abolished and it is understood, although unconfirmed, that HM R&C are again looking at re-introducing VAT on the full cost of hearing aids.

Laing and Buisson have reported that in the last year, spending by individuals on private healthcare (non cosmetic) such as hips and knees fell by nearly �30m. The spend for 2007 was �345m. The last significant downturn in this spending was in the recession of the early 1990�s.
Carers UK surveyed people who receive direct payments from social services on a "Choice or Chore" direction. Some of the findings were as follows.
